Thank you Jade, you have helped to save lives

Martina Devlin, writing in the Irish Independent, yesterday:

JADE Goody has influenced my behaviour. I never dreamed it was possible — I usually change channels or turn the page when I see her face.

Initially I tuned out because I found her depressing — reality TV culture personified is not a pretty sight; latterly it was because I felt sorry for her, living under a death sentence.

But Jade Goody  has had an impact on me.

A positive one. Yesterday, her story prompted me to pick up the phone to arrange a cervical cancer smear test — something I’ve been meaning to do for two years.

We all realise prevention is better than cure. But other people get cancer, not us. So taking time out to check on something none of us expects to happen — well, just gets pushed to the bottom of our ‘to do’ lists.
