How Much Would You Like This?
It’s funny the things you covet when you are a patient. I can’t stop thinking about how much I’d love to have this miracle device next time I have to get a blood draw. It’s a nightmare each time. Not only are my veins shot after chemo, but I have developed a needle phobia after too many mis-handled attempts to draw blood. While I wait for this dream device to appear, do you have any tips to share for how to make the process easier?
I hear ya sister! I get bloodwork monthly and have tiny, flat, nearly non-existant veins. I’ve been told to ask them to use a baby needle. I also find the “vein whisperer,” the one nurse or technician that just has that gift of drawing blood like a diviner does water and make him or her my go-to person. Good luck with that!

You know what, I don’t. Except that if you turn your arm sideways (so that the back of your hand faces inwards) there is an often ignored vein that appears, which is often good for an IV insertion. My scans are next week – on the on the 31st, the next on 1st, and they both require IVs. I’m dreading the needles as much as I’m dreading the process. Too many misfires as well, in my experience, and burst veins. So, I look forward to reading people’s tips! They are greatly needed.

Man, I would love to have a vein-finding device! My veins were wimpy and stubborn (a curious combination) pre-cancer, but have absolutely rebelled after cancer. Curiously enough, though, my needle phobia has been wiped out by the hundreds of sticks and pokes over the last five years, and I no longer get sweaty palms or hyperventilate because of a blood draw.

I always ask for the butterflies as opposed to the straight stick. It’s thinner and easier. Still there’s always some technician who just isn’t good no matter what.

I dread needle time…

I ask them to be patient rather than going straight at it. I’ve found if they give it a little longer – say 5 minutes – the veins will eventually come up enough to make it a less stressful and more successful process for both of us. Drinking lots of water the day before also helps a bit.
