Michael Douglas amazed by support
I’ve just been reading an interview with the actor Michael Douglas in the current issue of PEOPLE magazine. Douglas, who is currently undergoing treatment for throat cancer, is promoting his new movie, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and told PEOPLE: “I’m very optimistic and hopeful right now… You get to know cancer survivors, and the kind of support and outpouring I’ve been getting has just been amazing.”
While it is not surprising that a celebrity will always get this kind of public outpouring of support, what may not be as well known is the wonderful support we cancer survivors can and do give each other too. You only have to witness the unique communities that have built up which inspire, inform, and empower cancer patients. The knowledge that we are not alone in our fight can be a great source of strength and courage.

How social media is an ally in fight against cancer
Marie,
During different phases of our lives, we are drawn into contact with different communities. How that particular community inspires and reforms us, in many ways, determine our future course of action.
From what I have witnessed, and what my instincts tell me, the “community of cancer patients and survivors” – if I may humbly use such term, is one of the bravest I’ve seen yet; and one reason for being so is simply because, there exists no jealousy among people here, here exists sincere empathy, boundless courage, infinite encouragement and strong love that even binds and at times overwhelms complete strangers.

Michael Douglas having cancer once again says to all of us cancer doesn’t care about your status. I hope his situation will bring more attention to this disease. I’m glad he has chosen to be so open about it so far. That helps all of us.

Hi Nancy, I agree with your comment so much. Cancer doesn’t care what age you are or what your circumstances in life are – in that way it is certainly an equal opportunities advocate!
