Lessons from the movies
Today’s post is inspired by my friend Luann’s latest blog post, where she draws analogies between the lessons she has learned on her own cancer journey and the lessons inherent in the classic Wizard of Oz movie. When I first watched this classic 1939 Judy Garland film as a child, I didn’t realise just how many life lessons were contained in this story. Now, years later, I realise what a powerful story it is for all times. I can see the lessons to be learnt in Dorothy’s journey as she struggles to overcome the turbulent twisters on her journey and the lessons she learns from the cast of characters she meets along the way. I have even found a website dedicated to the practise of “ozology” which states that “the simplest truths of life are often the most profound and most important, and though the simplicities of the Wizard of Oz may seem platitudinous, they are all that we need to understand ourselves and the world around us.”
The characters of Dorothy and Toto, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wizard of Oz and such iconic images of the yellow brick road and Dorothy’s ruby slippers have all become part of the our cultural imagination.
There are so many scenes and metaphors to choose from, but for me one of my favourite lessons is contained towards the end of the film, where Dorothy misses her balloon flight home, starts to cry, but is then told by Glinda, the Good Witch, that with those ruby slippers, she had the power to return home the whole time. The answer was literally under her nose or on her feet to be precise. Like Dorothy, we are all more powerful than we think and the answers we seek are always within.
So how about you? Have you learned any profound life lessons from the movies? Please share your own stories of movie inspiration with us.
What a great post. I too love this classic film and I guess what I have learned from it is to do with a lesson on friendship and accepting your friends for who they are. A true friend will help you on your life’s journey and get you through all the problems—big and small—that may arise. So accept your friends, quirks and all, and recognize when they need a little help too. Because you never know when you’ll need them around to rescue you from some flying monkeys

I’ve learned that it’s important to sing and skip your way along the yellow brick road of life 🙂

Although Glinda the Good Witch directs Dorothy to the yellow brick road, explaining that it will lead her to the one person who can get her back home to Kansas, Dorothy probably could have found the road on her own. It was right there in front of her.

The lesson I draw from the movie actually relates very well to your earlier empowering the patient post. One of the most memorable scenes in the film is when we discover the Wizard is just a man. He has no magical powers. And so I think it is with the medical profession too – they are just human!

Ah there’s no place like home..this is my favorite line from the movie and home means more than just the place you live in. It’s wherever the people you love are 🙂

Dorothy knew giving her ruby slippers to the Wicked Witch would only lead to trouble but despite her reservations she did it anyway. The lesson I take from this is when someone tries to make you do something you know in your heart isn’t right, stand firm and stay true to yourself. Don’t give away your ruby red slippers so easily!

I love the childhood classic Pollyanna. In it Hayley Mills plays the little girl who invented “The Glad Game.” She had the wonderful ability of finding the good in every person and every situation and is a wonderful lesson in finding happiness by knowing where to look.

Marie,
The answer we seek are always within us. In fact the essence of the universe, the ultimate knowledge – is hidden inside our mind, and hence, everything in the universe is derived from there. The power of mental visualization is amazing. Buddha once said, “We are shaped by our thoughts; it leads us to believe whatever we want to believe, we become what we think.” When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves and vice versa.

I believe this is why movies such as this one has stood the test of time, because it’s filled with so many life lessons.
I absolutely love what Catherine wrote in her comment above: “I’ve learned that it’s important to sing and skip your way along the yellow brick road of life.” It’s east to forget to do this, I always smile when I see my now 13 yr old, still occasionally skip from here to there, it reminds me that she is still quite carefree. I hope she never loses that. Great post!

Great post Marie, and great comments! I have to tell you that whenever my daughter (almost 13 yrs old) is feeling sick she gets her pillow and blanket and lays on the couch watching the Wizard of Oz. Maybe all the good messages in it make her feel better, or maybe it is just the wonder and awe of that movie. Whatever it is it works!

Dead Man Walking is an incredibly moving and inspirational movie. Sister Helen Prejean’s act of love forever changed how I think of the death penalty and those in society who some consider not worthy of mercy.

I think we all need a pair of beautiful sparkly shoes to get us through treatment- (A friend gave me the most beautiful pair 1/2 way through radiation and on bad days when I felt sad or fed up, I would wear those shoes and sparkle my way through the day! !) Dorothy had her dog, her friends, and the most radiant shoes in the world, how could she have not made it through? There really are alot of good lessons in that movie.
