Time for some guilt free treats

Eating healthy is all well and good, but sometimes that craving for something sweet just has to be given into. My husband has a very sweet tooth and finding ways to make healthy desserts and cakes for us both has turned me into a creative cook. I tried omitting sugar from recipes and while I could tolerate it, my lovely husband’s crestfallen face when I served up these sugar-free treats drove me back to the kitchen to experiment with sugar alternatives.
Thankfully I discovered dates! Dates are an unprocessed form of sugar which still contains all its fibre and nutrients. I also use as much wholewheat flour as I can in my baking and try to add in as much goodness as possible in the form of nuts, seeds and dried fruit.
There is nothing which cheers up a cold and wet miserable day (which has sadly passed for our Irish summer this year) like a cuppa and a slice of something still warm from the oven. I don’t want to give up that tradition so I will continue my search for healthier ways to bake. Have you any tips or recipes you can share with me? Let me know if you do!

This was so helpful – I too would like to try some sugar free baking so I am going to try out the dates!

I try all I can to cut back on sugar, usually halving it in most recipes. I also add whole wheat flour or regular oats to the mix instead of all white flour. I fixed up one of my Moms pumpkin bread recipes to be much more healthy although it still is a bit sinful:-)
I’ll see what I have and maybe send you something. I have to admit I am with your husband, I miss the sugar!
Love to you, Debbie
