K is for Knitting
I’m a knitter. Admittedly not the best knitter but that’s ok. While it’s good to challenge myself by learning new patterns and stitches, it’s the act of knitting, the repetition of the stitches which makes it a good way for me to unwind and relax.
The Therapeutic Benefits of Knitting
It’s really interesting to learn about research studies which confirm the therapeutic benefits of knitting.
From Stichlink:
Knitters learn other valuable life skills such as patience, perseverance, and the knowledge that mistakes can be undone. These skills can be utilised in the self-management of health and illness. Knitting provides a great way of developing creative ability within the safe framework of the knitting pattern. It provides a structure within which the vulnerable feel safe to begin their creative journey. As confidence and ability develop, creativity can be encouraged until the individual is happy to experiment and deal with the setbacks that experimentation and exploration may bring.
I’ve not advanced much beyond knitting scarves and baby cardigans for friends with new babies. But I get so much pleasure from gifting these items. Each time I start a new project I think of the person I’m knitting it for and interweave love in every stitch.
How about you? I know some of you are knitters too. Tell me more about what knitting means to you.
I love this!! I have so many lovely memories of learning to knit with my grandmother and great grandmother. Not only did I get to do the activity with them, I have always been settled and centered by the act of knitting, crocheting and creating. Thank you for sharing!!

What lovely memories Abigail – thanks for sharing them with us, and I do love what you say about feeling settled and centered – that’s just how I feel too when I knit or crochet 🙂

I’m sorry I didn’t comment on this post earlier, Marie – I was in the middle of knitting a baby outfit for a friend! I hadn’t knitted anything complicated for years, and it really taxed my brain. I agree that it’s generally very therapeutic, though. Over the winter I’ve enjoyed knitting scarves while I’m watching TV or a film, and donating them to the Royal Marsden Hospital charity to raise funds.

I saw that baby outfit on facebook when you posted a pic – it was gorgeous. I love knitting while watching something on TV too and I really like your idea of donating them – I’ve run out of friends to knit scarves for at this stage 😉
