that Julia knew what she was talking about – makes me want to watch some of her more memorable shows on youtube! I have always loved cooking, but since Hugh died, I’ve lost my mojo. so I am going to try to make an effort over the holidays (oy, the holidays) to make some comfort foods to share with two elderly widows in our neighborhood. I am hoping that maybe sharing food and making them happy will help restore what I was so passionate about – cooking for Hugh was such a joy – and I need some joy in my life right now. thanks for reminding me that all is not lost and prompting me to do something I CAN do, and thinking less about that damned missing mojo.
Dearest Karen, did you ever watch the movie Julia and Julia? I really enjoyed learning more about the person behind the cooking success. My mom was an amazing cook and I find myself trying to recreate (not without any great success) some of the dishes she was so good at. Being a traditional Irish mother, she baked brown bread and scones and the scent of them freshly baked out of the oven each week, was the smell of nurturing and love for me.
". . .and the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and JOYFUL, by which we arrive at the ground at our own feet, and learn to be at home."
Wendell Berry
Excellent advice. Especially when one is old. Thanks.
