Breast Cancer Rope of Solidarity Climb
On the 27th of September, 2008, 100 women, 80 of them breast cancer survivors, gathered together in Zermatt, Switzerland to climb the Breithorn mountain for the first Rope of Solidarity climb.
Supported by family and friends, their climb bore witness to the fact that while cancer is an arduous and uphill struggle, it can be overcome with the support of others. The rope of solidarity united these breast cancer survivors and their loved ones who also were touched by their illness.
This year on the 17-18 of September, the Zonta Club Morges La Côte will organise the second Rope of Solidarity in Zermatt and they would like to invite an Irish participant to take part. So if you have been affected by breast cancer and would like to take up this challenge, then contact me directly at beyondbreastcancer@live.com and I will forward your name to the organisers.

Really like the analogy this draws between the experience of cancer and that of climbing a high mountain – it’s so true – it’s a long hard trek but when you get to the top, the views are spectacular!

I really like that the rope includes family and friends as they have had to journey alongside their loved ones through cancer treatment too – it is an important acknowledgment that cancer doesn’t just affect the patient

Very impressive – lifts the hair on your neck if you understand – maybe even if facing a life threatening illness is foreign to you. Hey, what do you ladies think of this one? …

I love this idea! Does an honorary Irish woman with breast cancer count? After I reached the summit of an almost 10K mountain last September with my husband, I literally felt on top of the world. Breastless, I was breathless with the scenery and for having accomplished this feat. Nothing is so exhilarating! Thanks for sharing this with your readers. Jan

I probably can’t go at this time. Is it every two years? I could put my name in the hat for a couple years from now.

Wow! I imagine that would be a challenging climb for even the most experienced. It shows what we can do with a little help from our friends who understand our journey. This is inspiring.

Good for you Jan. You I hope will live long and full for your positive attitude and perseverance. I think I had a tad less of it than you even before cancer.
