Meat Free Monday
It’s a Bank Holiday weekend here in Ireland I thought I’d celebrate with a giveaway – so up for grabs is a copy of Sheryl Crow’s brand new cookery book If It Makes You Healthy (love the play on words there).
I have been a fan of Sheryl for a long time – she is such a talented singer and songwriter and her version of the song The First Cut is the Deepest is one of my all time favorite songs. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, she handled it in the public eye with grace and dignity and became a breast cancer advocate, pointing out that she has no family history of breast cancer, and saying “I want to know what causes this disease. We need to put more resources into figuring out what the environment has to do with breast cancer.” (watch a video of Sheryl testifying before a House Health subcommittee on breast cancer).
When Sheryl’s book publishers contacted me with the offer of a review copy, my first reaction was, oh no, not another celebrity cook book, and my expectations weren’t that high. I duly received my copy, put it on the shelf and forgot about it until this weekend, when I took it out, read it and just loved it!
Sheryl’s conversion (like so many of us) to healthy eating began with her breast cancer diagnosis and (unlike most of us) she hired a personal chef and a nutritionist to overhaul her bad eating habits. While we don’t all have access to a personal chef, we can have access to his recipes in this book. Chuck White is an enthusiastic and inventive chef with a passion for organic food and cooking in tune with the seasons. For the first time ever in reading a cookbook, I actually got up from the chair in the middle of reading one of his salad recipes to make it instantly, because I couldn’t wait to try it out!
In this book you will find an imaginative collection of recipes such as Lime-Kissed Stuffed Avocados and a spin on the traditional PBJ – Cashew Butter and Fruit “Caviar”. Crow’s nutritionist, Rachel Beller, offers tips throughout to educate readers and combined with beautiful illustrations and Sheryl’s down-to-earth narrative, the book is an absolute delight.
If you would like to win a copy of If It Makes You Healthy, then simply leave a comment below, telling us what changes you have made to your diet or sharing some inventive recipes or imaginative twist on an old classic. Winners will be picked at random from the comments both here and on the Facebook page (so to double your chances of winning, why not leave a comment in both places!)
Oh and I nearly forgot to post today’s Meat Free recipe…here it is
Lime Kissed Avocados
ripe avocados
4 teaspoons fresh lime juice
1½ teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon black pepper
4 tablespoons fresh store-bought salsa, preferably organic
Blue corn or flax seed tortillas, preferably organic
Cut the avocados into halves and remove pits. Carefully scoop the flesh from each avocado, leaving the skins intact so that you can refill them. Transfer the avocado flesh to a glass mixing bowl. Add the lime juice, salt, cumin, garlic powder, and pepper and mash with a fork or potato masher. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
Spoon the avocado back into the scooped-out skins. Garnish the top of each with a tablespoon of fresh salsa.
Serve with organic blue corn or flax seed tortillas.
I love Sheryl Crow and like her my own diagnosis of breast cancer was the kick up the proverbial I needed to overhaul my own eating habits. I am much more conscious of what I put into my body now.

What a great giveaway. I guess my only tips is that I try to add things like flaxseed oil and nuts and seeds to all my dishes. It is more simple changes such as these that I have incorporated into my diet.

Like you, I groaned when I heard that Sheryl had brought out another cook book in an already crowded market, but I trust your judgment and if you say it’s good Marie, well that’s enough for me 😉
PS Would love to see for myself!

I had that cookbook on my wish list for my birthday and didn’t get it, so this is perfect timing! Here’s my go-to recipe: fast, healthy, & open to adaptation.
Fish in Foil
4 (4-6 oz) cod filets
1 pint cherry tomatoes
2-3 Tablespoons pesto
2 lemons
1 bunch asparagus, cut into 3-inch pieces
Put fish on pieces of foil big enough to wrap up into a packet. Season with salt & pepper if you like. Spread with pesto. Cut lemons in half and squeeze over fish & pesto, then add handfuls of tomatoes. Toss in asparagus pieces, and wrap each end of foil over top to make a packet. Be sure to gather foil rather loosely at the top, to allow room for steam. Place foil packets on baking dish and bake for 20 minutes at 425 degrees or until fish flakes easily and is cooked through. You can also put the foil packets on the grill; adapt cooking time according to grill heat.

What a great giveaway! I am newly diagnosed with breast cancer and wanting to eat more healthily – this book sounds like a great starting point, particularly with the input of a nutritionist.

I have a list of superfoods pinned to my kitchen noticeboard. Each week when I go shopping I pick one of these to buy and cook – it is only a small thing, but believe me when I think about how poor my cooking was before i started to do this..it’s a big thing!

I too would love to win this book. I have Metastatic Breast Cancer and my cancer has spread to my bones and liver. I will be the first to admit I haven’t been eating the healthiest diet but I think it’s time for a change. And I love Sheryl Crow so I know this has to be a great cookbook!

Great review Marie! As I said on Facebook I have heard some great comments about this book from various sources. I have made many changes to my diet since my diagnosis. By joining weight watchers online I have been able to track my eating habits and learn a lot about appropriate portions and how to eat a more balanced diet with many more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. And along with exercise I have lost 30 pounds! I feel so great and am so much more aware of my food choices and the pull of ’emotional eating’. I still eat a wide variety of foods (not any packaged WW foods) and I eat desserts and have the occasional drink of alcohol. I am trying to become a vegetarian as I have read so much about how a plant based diet is really best for cancer survivors. But it is hard for me to give up dairy and chicken, easy for me to give up red meat though. Thanks for giving us all food for thought:) Sorry had to add that there!
Love, Deb

Well Deb what I liked about this book was that it said it was ok to have the occasional treat and there are some delicious treats and that is the kind of diet that works for me 😉 Thanks for the terrific comment and good luck in the giveaway!

Thanks for the wonderful review, Marie, and for the giveaway contest! Cheryl Crow is a true inspiration to me, too. I LOVE guacomole and anything made with avocados, so I will try out that delectable recipe you provided.
After my breast cancer diagnosis I refrained from going to all-you-can-eat buffets and potlucks because I always go out of control at these eating fests. All the variety is too tempting to resist, especially the desserts. So that was my gift to my health: stay away from excess, even if there is a luscious salad bar included in the price. The price is still too high.
XOXOXO,
Jan

What a great comment Jan and some wonderful advice to everyone. I so understand what you mean about all you can buffets – far too tempting – but as you say the price is too high. I also love your phrase of a gift to your health – what a lovely way to put it with 🙂

I’ve had to go Gluten Free because it was causing terrible stomach cramps (and other stuff no-one really needs to hear about except doctors!) it’s been a hard road and I have to be so vigilant about everything. I’ve also started cleaning up my diet, piece by piece because it’s easier (and cheaper) to eat healthy and gluten free than eat gluten-free junk!

Sheryl’s right, a change definitely does do you good- I find that cooking a meal from scratch is so satisfying at the end of the day. It also makes me really watch what I eat as well as saving money as I used to be so tempted to eat out a lot!
A book like this would only tempt me further to stay in and have fun with tasty food!

Breast cancer has been the wake-up call for me in changing my diet, as well. Having grown up and lived my adult life eating meat with every meal and feasting on breads (why on earth would I ever eat whole grains?!), I have recently made the switch to eating mostly vegetarian and vegan when possible. I would LOVE a new cookbook with great tasting healthy recipes! Thanks for making the giveaway possible!
