Talking to your child about cancer
Breast cancer impacts the whole family, especially children. But how do you share information with young people while helping them to feel safe, secure and loved?
During Family Matters: Talking with School-Age Children About Breast Cancer, Kathleen Coyne, MSS, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with expertise in children, cancer and communication, discussed:
- talking about breast cancer with children ages 6-18
- understanding their concerns about your health and well-being
- how to use age-appropriate words to explain diagnosis and treatment
- recognizing coping problems and open the lines of communication
Co-hosted by Living Beyond Breast Cancer and The Wellness Community of Philadelphia, this meeting covered a variety of situations, including talking about a new diagnosis, going through treatment and living with metastatic disease.
