Taking care of your girls

A recent comment by Kim on this blog, which mentioned that her youngest daughter (14) had just told her that her friend said that wearing a bra to bed causes breast cancer.  It got me thinking about how young girls get their information about the causes of breast cancer, so I did a bit of research and came up with “Taking Care of Your Girls” , a book written by Dr Marisa Weiss, an oncologist and breast health specialist, and her teenage daughter, Isabel. The book aims to address the usual list of worries and misconceptions teenage girls may have about their growing breasts.

Although breast cancer may be the last thing on a young girl’s mind as she is growing and developing, it is vital that all women learn from an early age to be breast aware.  It would also be very helpful for any young girl who has a female relative who has been diagnosed with breast cancer in understanding how breast cancer develops, the risk factors and how breast cancer is treated. The book aims to empower girls to take control of their long-term breast care by adopting healthy lifestyle habits in terms of their diet, exercise, etc.

It sounds like an excellent book and I can really see the benefit to mothers who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and wondering how they should discuss it with their daughters and how to allay their fears of developing it themselves. It should also help teenage girls such as Kim’s daughter and her friends to separate the myths from facts!

Taking Care of Your Girls is available on Amazon.
