When I Grow Up
I absolutely love this advertisement from Kaiser Permanente, encouraging women to get mammograms. “When I Grow Up” was inspired by the unprecedented rates of mammography screenings for women served by Kaiser Permanente in Southern California.
Now, when I grow up…I want to be just like these ladies 🙂
I’ve seen that ad Marie and I love it. I remember after my first all clear tests results 10 yrs ago a friend of mine asked me now what. What do you want to do when you grow up *Said tough in cheek of course * And I said , what I want when I grow up is to be able to grow old and be an old woman. My friend looked at me funny, she didn’t understand what I meant even after I explained it. But that is ok, maybe only a survivor would truly understand something like that. I was only about 33 yrs old at the time and she was younger. She hadn’t reached that point in her life where she would appreciate the concept, of it being a privilege to get to grow old. When friends of mine complain about lines & wrinkles on their faces. I always say, See this line, I love this line. It shows I’m still here.
And Irish Proverb from my grandmother “Do not resent growing old. Many are denied the privilege”

Marie, thanks so much for sharing this. What an awesome ad. And they are using one of my all-time favorite songs by Michelle Shocked (who is pretty awesome in her own right.)

Thanks Jackie and yes, I haven’t heard Michelle Shocked in a long time, so I enjoyed listening to her song too.

Thanks so much for posting this. I love it. My family is missing that generation of women no thanks to breast cancer and I can only hope I get to be an old woman.
I’m totally stealing (as I tend to do) this for my fb page. It really drives the message home.

Oh please do “steal” it – spread the joy I say 🙂 May you live to a ripe old joyful age Stacey and kick up your heels like these ladies!

What an effective ad. Their joy for life is infectious. My own mother has never been emotionally available. She revels in being a victim, so I seem to gravitate to old women, probably in search of the mother I never had.

I think I am already in the – ahem – age cohort described and LOVED this. Also love the Irish proverb from Sandy and Brenda’s observation about their “joy for life”. Headed out to ride my bike and try to emulate their great example :-).
