Happy Independence Day!
Today is Independence Day,the national holiday of the United States. More commonly known as the Fourth of July, it commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.
Now we don’t celebrate Independence Day in Ireland, but that is no reason not to have our own personal day of declaring independence from anything that holds us captive in our own lives. So choose today to declare yourself free of :
Wanting things to be different than they are
Suffering is often the result of wanting things to be different than the way they are. Free yourself from your deep desire for things to be different or to have been different. Things are as they are. Sometimes you can’t change that, but you can change your attitude to things. Your perceptions are entirely up to you. You may not be able to control certain circumstances or people, but you can control how you think and react. Consider how your discomfort with a particular situation might be eased by accepting things as they are, and no longer fighting it.
Worrying
Free yourself from the futility of useless worrying. Recently I published a post by Deepak Chopra on the subject of worrying. Worry, he reminds us, is a form of pain, of chronic anxiety, one of the least productive of all emotions. Worry is like mental smog. It keeps you from seeing clearly. So today, let anxiety be your past. Instead let a renewal of hope and love be your guide in the future.
Having a closed mind
Free your mind of preconceptions and notions of impossibility. Be open and willing to explore all possibilities. Embrace new opportunities. Enjoy the wonder and mystery of life. Release what you know and, like a wide-eyed child, take it all in anew. Do not ignore the quiet, stunningly beautiful treasures in each ordinary moment. Happiness is not in some distant place of perfection and pleasure. Happiness is waiting for you to give it life in this moment.
Now what about you?
What things will you choose on Independence Day to free yourself of? My wish today for you all is that you learn to free yourself of all useless emotions that no longer serve you, all addictions, anxieties and worries that keep you from being the free, independent and happy person you were meant to be.
Happy Independence Day everyone!

Love the idea of this post, Marie – celebrating our own independence, as it is usually as hard won as the freedom of any country!
I’d like to add freedom from the judgement of others – no-one else knows what it is to be you, so how can they be a better judge of how you live your life?
Make your own choices – own them, live them – there is nothing wrong or selfish about choosing to make yourself strong and happy first.
Happy Independence Day!

Oh Michele, you are making me homesick. I am an American married to an Irish man and I am missing my family back home in the USA 😦

I so agree with Angela’s suggestion. We judge each other far too easily..what is that saying about not judging until we’ve walked a mile in another’s shoes? So true!
