Martina Navratilova diagnosed with breast cancer
You have probably heard by now that tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer Reading her PEOPLE interview I was very struck by her feelings of vulnerability and loss of control when she received the news of her diagnosis.
“I cried,” she says, “It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it’s completely out of my hands.”
Ah yes, doesn’t that feeling sound familiar to many of us?
Navratilova, 53, said that she had gone 4 years since her last mammogram, a decision she says she now regrets: “Everyone gets busy, but don’t make excuses. I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me. Another year and I could have been in big trouble.”
Yes, that is exactly how I felt to…that sense of not being in control

But I think the point that you are all missing here, is that cancer is random – just because Navratilova was a disciplined athlete doesn’t make her immune from getting cancer!

Dear Women, please stop promoting a vegetarian diet as a healthy one. Learn the facts for yourselves-don’t buy into the party line. A vegetarian diet didn’t help Linda Mcartney.
And to the poster who said that cancer is random, come on, that makes absolutely no sense. It’s not random ( a lightning strike is “possibly” random). Maybe what you really mean to say is that we don’t yet know why one person gets cancer and another does not, but that isn’t the same as randomness. One thing for certain, there are a lot of vegetarians who seem to get breast cancer. Meat-eaters also get cancer, so adding processed meat to a bad diet won’t help. A lot of vegetarians, in order to replace meat, eat a lot of junk and “fake (soy) meats”-plus lots of legumes, nuts, grains in their attempt to replace/augment protein. Grains, Legumes, (and nuts, to a certain extent) contain Anti-nutrients. A little may be okay, but cross a threshold, and…who knows? Soy is a whole other story…!
Research for yourselves when it come to diet- all sides-and don’t get fooled by a political or moral agenda. Your body doesn’t care- it wants/needs proper nutrition.

Sunnylane, what about all the meat that is pumped full of hormones? How can that be a healthy diet?

I never said that “hormone meat” is healthy-in my post I said that meat eaters also get cancer (definition of meat can be pretty wide-lunch meats, sausages, and God knows what else-including hormone stacked meats). But, I am convinced that hormone free meats (Beef-Chicken, Lamb, Turkey, but not Pork) are excellent for your health, in fact, health promoting. I love animals as much as the next person, and wish that we didn’t have to eat meat, but that doesn’t change the facts.
