Find the answer within
Since 1995, Ralph Marston’s words of wisdom and joy have brought encouragement to many through his Daily Motivator website. He has published more than 4,000 brief, positive and empowering messages, such as the one below, which I really feel speaks to us as cancer patients and survivors, particularly when we are trying to make the right choices for ourselves.
You can’t depend on some expert or guru to provide you with the answer you seek. Instead of looking for the answer outside yourself, choose to be the answer by the way you think and act. You are the world’s most knowledgeable expert on your own life. Put some of that expertise to good use. Certainly others can give you advice, suggestions, inspiration and expanded perspective. Yet it is up to you to choose what is best for your own unique situation.
The most valuable course of action is not to be found by plugging yourself into someone else’s formula. The success you will achieve is the success you work to define on your own terms. Speak with your own voice, think with your own mind, and act according to your own vision. The expert advice that will be most beneficial is the control you exercise over the choices you make. Live in such a way as to be the solution to the problems you face and the answer to the questions you ponder.

This was really helpful to me today. I am struggling with a difficult decision regarding what treatment option I should take and my head is so confused with such conflicting advice. Having read this, I have decided to read through all the expert opinion and then do some quiet going within and praying, where I now feel I will find the answer. Thank you! Thank you for posting this today Marie – it was just what I needed to hear.

I love the line – You are the world’s most knowledgeable expert on your own life! Sometimes we tend to forget that – so thanks for reminding us 🙂

Wow! I have been praying for the past few days for guidance on how I should deal with a certain situation in my life which has been troubling me greatly. Family and friends all have their own opinion and advice, but this morning, reading your post, the answer suddenly came to me. It was there all along inside my head – all I need was the confidence to see it.

I was introduced to “Bhagwat Gita” very early in life, with the adage that it contains answer to every question in life. Thereafter, I have carried it to everywhere I have been to. It is my lifeline during hours of quandary and emancipation from distress.

You can ask as many as you want for guidance, and opinions but in the end, it’s you who has to make the final decision regarding issues with yourself. As we all know some decisions come easier than others, sometimes gentle reminders, such as this post today, bring us to the place where we can make up our minds.
As the commenter above me said, after reading this post somehow the decision I had to make seems to be clear cut in my head now. Thank you!

Great post Marie, and how great that so many of the people who commented have read this at just the right time! I LOVE when that happens. I also love this line, “The expert advice that will be most beneficial is the control you exercise over the choices you make.” You know how I feel about choice:) This is a great reminder that we have the power within to do what we need to do. If only we believe in ourselves.

Dear Marie,
So happy I found the time to read your blog again and today of all days. Excellent blog and you are so right!
It is always difficult to not look outside yourself to find the answers you need and it is a process learning to trust your own instincts and to define your own terms. But life gets so much better if you manage to do so.
Thanks for sharing and I’ll try to do better in the future an dmake time for your blog.
