Maura Tierney returns to TV screens after cancer
I like to check the search terms that people use to reach the JBBC blog and one of the most frequent searches is for the actress Maura Tierney. So I thought I would update readers who may be interested in how she is doing following her breast cancer diagnosis last year.
Now in remission, Tierney best known for her ER role as Nurse Abby Lockhart, is returning to TV with a starring role on the upcoming ABC drama The Whole Truth. Last year her breast cancer diagnosis meant she made the decision to drop out of NBC’s Parenthood, and instead to channel her energy into a stage role in the Wooster Group’s revival of North Atlantic.
“A theater role was also a much better fit for me last fall than television,” Tierney told the New York Times in April this year. “I felt terrible leaving the Parenthood team in the lurch, but doing the show would have been very stressful because I didn’t want that phase of my life documented on film. There is no HD in the theater.”
Sadly, the actress’s father, former Boston City Council President. Joseph M. Tierney, died at his Hyde Park home at age 68 after a brief battle with cancer last December.
