A Gift: Dedicated To You
Following on from yesterday’s reflections I wanted to share this beautiful poem I came across today. I share it with deepest gratitude to all of you my loyal readers, to whom I am forever indebted.
A Gift
Just when you seem to yourself
nothing but a flimsy web
of questions, you are given
the questions of others to hold
in the emptiness of your hands,
songbird eggs that can still hatch
if you keep them warm,
butterflies opening and closing themselves
in your cupped palms, trusting you not to injure
their scintillant fur, their dust.
You are given the questions of others
as if they were answers
to all you ask. Yes, perhaps
this gift is your answer.

Interesting poem. It is amazing how we find those connections through caring for the stories of others.

That’s really beautiful, Marie. And it is especially special since Denise Levertov was born near you (England) and died in Seattle in 1997. She was one of the poets we studied in high school and I may have even heard her do a reading for a student poetry event I attended as a girl.
