Winner of British Open pays emotional tribute to late wife
Northern Irish golfer Darren Clarke fought back tears as he paid an emotional tribute to the wife he lost to breast cancer five years ago.
“In terms of what’s going through my heart, there’s obviously somebody who is watching down from up above there, and I know she’d be very proud of me,” said the golfer from Dungannon, Co Tryone, of his wife Heather.
One of the first players to congratulate Clarke on his win was golfer Phil Mickelson, whose own wife Amy is in remission from breast cancer.
‘Darren was one of the first people who called us when Amy was diagnosed,’ said Mickelson. ‘He couldn’t have been a better person to talk to.We talked for a few hours a couple of times and he told us what to expect and what they went through — their fears and so forth.”
Heather Clarke had been diagnosed with primary breast cancer in December 2001, then, in 2004, with secondary breast cancer. Throughout her illness, she had insisted her husband continue playing championship golf, but he decided to stop in 2005 and 2006 so he could be with her and their two young children, Tyrone and Conor. Heather died on Sunday 13 August 2006 at 39 years of age, in the Royal Marsden Hospital, London.
Such a genuinely nice guy – am so pleased he won the Open – at long last!

I was pulling for him and was moved to tears by his story. Thanks for this lovely post, Marie. I was planning to write about his today myself but think you nailed it. Congrats to Darren and hats off to all the men who support a woman affected by BC.

Marie, Thank you for this post. I saw a few moments of this event and I had no idea about this story behind Darren Clarke. It shows once again how randomly cancer strikes and takes. I’m sure his win was bittersweet. Thanks so much for sharing.

Oh how privileged Darren must have felt to be able to pay public tribute to his beautiful wife. I have a good business friend whose relative died of cancer at Royal Marsden Hospital. My understanding is that it is an excellent facility.
I love the fact that Darren’s friend Phil was able to support him in his time of both triumph and grief. There’s nothing like a good friend who’s had a taste of your trials to boost your spirits. Thanks for sharing.
XOXO,
Jan

This is what I’ve feared for my own husband. While I’ve gotten through my year of treatment and would like to think this is all over, it’s heartbreaking to imagine leaving him so early in our journey.
Good to see he’s keeping on with their dream for his golfing talent. I’m sure, as he said, she’s smiling and cheering him on from above.
