Happy Social Media Day
Mashable, the social media and digital experts, have declared today to be Social Media Day. The global event is a celebration of the technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices be heard.
The idea is to connect with fellow web enthusiasts by hosting a Social Media Day Meetup in your area. There’s no better way to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue than by socializing with your online community offline.
Sadly for me, I won’t get to meet with you offline today, but let’s celebrate anyway! You all know how much my online interactions with you mean to me and how much it has enriched my life. I have learned so much from your wise comments, found comfort and support when I needed it most and had a few smiles along the way. None of this would be possible without the social media revolution which has connected us across the globe.
Perhaps some of you can meet offline today, and if so, then do take this opportunity to do so. Yesterday evening, I got the chance to meet up with some bloggers and tweeters at the Heritage Hotel at Bloggers International*and it was great to see everyone come together for this lively, friendly and informative meet-up. I guess you could say we celebrated in advance of today’s event (and as one of the organizers said to me…in some time zones we made it!)
So my question to you today is…do you think social media day is something worth celebrating? What has your engagement with social networking meant to you? Have you had any offline meet-ups? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I applaud this initaitive – it is too easy to just stay with our online relationships and not take them offline – sure logistics play a part – but if you can, I would encourage you to try meeting offline too. I have made some wonderful friends that way.

I’m a social media fanatic, so I’m glad this day exists.
Social media has gone beyond my wildest dreams. I first started my blog just there to provide information. However, I have discovered AWESOME bloggers who have taught me a lot. And I feel the friendship of so many whom I would not have crossed paths with had it not been for social media.

I like any excuse to celebrate, so Happy Social Media Day to everyone! I too started my blog just to keep friends & family informed of my “cancer journey” but it has morphed into so much more. I love the community of bloggers and have learned so much. Thanks, Marie, for always putting out such great posts.

Social media is definitely something to celebrate. Like Beth, I’ve found that my blog has gone beyond its original purpose to provide information, and the friendships made through the blogosphere are now like a support group to me. Facebook has kept me in touch with high school friends I haven’t seen in decades. And, of course, you and I met offline last month. And what a joy that was! Congratulations for being included on this prestigious and important panel (your pic is fab!).

Social media is definitely worth celebrating. I often ponder how on earth I would have got through the last 2 years without the internet. I am sure it has contributed positively to my recovery – being able to share and read and comment … to create and continue dialogue. I love it!

Without Social Media, none of would know one another, share information, lift one another up when we’re down, or hold each other’s virtual hands. In some respects, my Social Media friends and their opinions mean more to me than my friend next door. Social Media is a revolution that has forever changed the world, not a passing fad as some have suggested.
Yes! Happy Social Media day!
XOXOXO,
Brenda

I agree with Nic – Marie, you make blogging seem simple. I know with my website, getting the info and fine-tuning it aren’t overly easy, but the real stumbler is the technical glitches that I don’t know if you have. Pretty time-consuming to keep it all going. Thanks for the good job you do. I am impressed that you have built such a following of happy lady visitors and hope I am able to eventually have as long, happy, and faithful a following to my site. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Best, Rachel
