ubuntuThanks to all of you who read and commented on yesterday’s post on grief. Once again I am struck by how much strength and comfort we can draw from each other. We should never be afraid to show our humanity and vulnerability and to reach out to others in the same spirit. President Obama’s words at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in South Africa yesterday reflects this beautifully:

Mandela understood the ties that bind the human spirit. There is a word in South Africa – ‘Ubuntu’ – that describes his greatest gift: his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us.

I am grateful for the invisible ties of Ubuntu that bind us all together in our humanity across the globe.
