Celebrating Friendship on International Women’s Day
Each year around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day. Many groups around the world choose different themes each year relevant to global and local gender issues.
So to mark the day, I want to give a shout out to all the women who have inspired and continue to inspire me here on Journeying Beyond Breast Cancer. I draw strength from your wisdom, your compassion and your kick ass attitude. So I guess if I was to choose my own theme for today it is Celebrating Female Friendship. Join me?
Called a woman friend last night. The purpose of the call was not really to chat but that is where we ended up. There I was in my kitchen cooking away with the phone up against my ear just talking about all manner of things. And when I hung up I felt so much better. There is a lot that separates us – nationality, maternal languages, age, life experience. On the surface it might seem that there is a chasm between us and yet the conversation was seamless and we had no trouble finding things to say to each other. I am so grateful to have woman friends here in the country where I live and I miss terribly the friends I had in my home country. When I think about friendship these days it’s joy and grief all mixed up in my head and my heart.
If we are to recognize women’s social achievements on this day, then a huge shout-out belongs to you, dear Marie, for bringing all of us together in this space. I’m happy to celebrate female friends today, and give special thanks to my blog friends. Cheers to all you wonderful women in the blogosphere!
